Does it get cold flying in a hot air balloon?

Answered By Editor

No. Actually, it is really not much colder in the balloon than on the ground. At high altitude, it is colder than at ground level, generally 3.5 degrees colder for each 1,000 feet of altitude. However, most balloonists fly low, anywhere from treetop level to 3,000 feet. So, you will not feel a big difference. If you book a hot air balloon flight, there is a good chance you will be taking flight sometime during early morning hours. The best wind conditions for ballooning are usually right after sunrise. So, especially in the Spring and Fall, you may want to dress in layers with a sweater or light jacket so that you can shed them during the flight as things warm up.
